Depart in the morning for Ayutthaya, Thailand’s magnificent former capital. We will explore several ancient ruins, beginning with the Khmer-inspired Wat Chaiwattanaram, including a photo stop at the reclining Buddha image at Wat Lokayasutharam. We will then continue to Wat Na Phra Men. This temple is perfect for those who are interested in history and archaeology. Remarkably, this temple survived Ayutthaya’s sacking by invading troops during the 18th century.
Next stop is Wat Mahathat (the Monastery of the Great Relic). Highlights include the octagonal stupas, solemn Buddha images, and other smaller Viharas. The most prominent landmark at the temple is the head of a sandstone Buddha entwined within the roots of Bodhi tree.
After Wat Mahathat, enjoy a ride on a typical Ayutthaya tuk-tuk (auto rickshaw), passing several attractions
including Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Praram and Wat Phra Si Sanphet, a former royal temple. Lunch break will be at Krungsri River Hotel (international buffet).
In the afternoon, take a motorboat cruise along the river pass several historical monuments and Thai houses. Before we return Bangkok, a quick stop is made to sample roti sai mai, one of Ayutthaya’s signature sweets.
